About Boyd Rankin

Boyd Rankin stands tall—literally and figuratively—as one of the pioneers of Irish pace bowling. Towering at 6’8”, Rankin brought bounce, pace, and fear into Ireland’s bowling attack during their rise on the global stage. Born on July 5, 1984, in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, Rankin began his career in a time when Ireland’s presence in international cricket was still growing. He became one of the first Irish cricketers to bowl consistently above 140 km/h. Rankin’s early years were closely tied to Ireland’s golden period, especially their dream run in the 2007 ICC World Cup. His height and awkward bounce troubled top-order batters, and he became a regular figure in Ireland’s limited-overs setup. But his ambitions took him briefly to England, where he qualified to play internationally and even represented England in the 2013–14 Ashes. While that phase gave him valuable exposure, his heart remained in Irish cricket. He returned to Ireland in 2016, right when the team was preparing for its next big leap—Test status. Rankin’s comeback was more than symbolic; it was a full-circle moment. In 2018, he was part of Ireland’s inaugural Test match against Pakistan, delivering with his trademark bounce and line. He also played a major role in white-ball cricket, often opening the bowling with menace. Rankin retired from international cricket in 2021 with over 150 wickets across formats. His contribution is not just measured in stats but in the inspiration he provided to future Irish fast bowlers—showing them that raw pace had a place in Irish cricket.
